CBS: Iran signals willingness to open energy sector to US in nuclear talks

20 February 2026 16:56

Two rounds of indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran have generated what diplomatic sources describe as “unique proposals” aimed at addressing Tehran’s nuclear programme and exploring potential economic cooperation between the two countries.

Sources familiar with the Oman-mediated talks told CBS News, discussions have focused on Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities, its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, and possible frameworks for a deal that could offer economic benefits to both sides.

Iran has long sought relief from U.S. sanctions, which have severely impacted its economy. A diplomatic source with knowledge of the negotiations told CBS News that Tehran has signaled it may be willing to purchase American-made aircraft and potentially grant U.S. companies access to Iranian oil and gas fields. The source also indicated that joint investment opportunities could form part of a broader agreement.

Two regional officials told CBS News that diplomats had advised U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to separate discussions over Iran’s nuclear activities from other contentious issues, including Tehran’s support for regional militias targeting U.S. interests and its ballistic missile programme. According to the officials, Witkoff appeared open to handling those matters in a separate diplomatic track involving regional stakeholders.

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported earlier, citing unnamed sources, that the United States was considering a limited strike on Iranian military and government targets as a means of pressuring Tehran to accept a nuclear agreement more favourable to Washington. The report said the option was designed to avoid triggering a broader conflict.

CBS News writes that any such operation could potentially take place as early as February 21.
