CBS reveals what prompted Trump to suspend new strikes against Iran

26 July 2026 17:41

The United States has temporarily suspended strikes on Iran to avoid undermining ongoing diplomatic efforts, CBS News reports, citing two regional sources.

The broadcaster confirmed an earlier Axios report that negotiations between Oman and Iran on reopening the Strait of Hormuz are making progress. However, it noted that "while things are headed in a positive direction, the diplomacy needs more time in order to reach a deal."

"The regional officials both indicated that the U.S. bombing was intentionally paused so as not to disrupt the delicate in-person diplomacy," CBS News added.

Axios had previously reported that the US military continues to prepare plans for expanding operations against Iran. However, on Friday, July 24, President Donald Trump personally ordered that a new round of strikes not be carried out, despite having authorized attacks for 13 consecutive days beforehand.

According to Axios' sources, Trump made the decision just hours after an Omani delegation arrived in Tehran for talks on a new agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which the outlet said could be reached over the weekend.
