Celery juice may boost well-being

03 January 2025 04:03

In its article, Health Digest describes that staying hydrated can often be more challenging than it seems, especially as we age.

Research indicates that three out of four people in the United States are "chronically dehydrated," and up to 28 per cent of older adults face dehydration on a regular basis (via StatPearls). Even if you're not a senior, you may still find it difficult to stay adequately hydrated.

While carrying a water bottle can serve as a helpful reminder to drink more water, it's not necessary to rely solely on water to stay hydrated. There are other beverages, including one often overlooked juice that might not currently be in your fridge — but should be.

That juice is celery juice. If you've only ever seen celery as an addition to a charcuterie board, a light snack, or a salad ingredient, it's time to reconsider. Like many vegetables, celery can be juiced, and its juice offers essential nutrients that can assist with better hydration.

Celery is composed mainly of water. According to the US Department of Agriculture, a 236-gram portion of raw celery contains 225 grams of water, making up about 95 per cent of its weight. When you juice celery, you remove the fiber but retain the water and other beneficial nutrients. One of these nutrients is potassium, which plays an important role in maintaining consistent hydration levels.

The potassium in celery juice has an added hydrating benefit due to its role as an electrolyte (according to the American Heart Association). One of its primary functions is to help regulate the water balance in your body, preventing fluid retention, which can lead to dehydration if not managed (per MedlinePlus).

As a result, drinking celery juice daily not only helps you stay hydrated but also enhances your body’s ability to effectively utilize the water you consume from various foods and drinks.
