Chagos dispute triggers Mauritius to suspend relations with Maldives
The Republic of Mauritius has immediately suspended all diplomatic relations with the Republic of Maldives, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade announced on February 27.
According to the official statement, the decision comes in response to a recent stance by the Maldivian government, which “no longer recognises the sovereignty of the Republic of Mauritius over the Chagos Archipelago, its territorial integrity, and is now objecting to the agreement between Mauritius and the United Kingdom.”
The ministry emphasised that the suspension of diplomatic ties reflects Mauritius’s determination to safeguard its national interests and uphold principles of sovereignty, respect for the UN Charter, international law, and the maintenance of regional peace and stability.
