Chancellor: Germany to stop revealing military aid details amid war in Ukraine
During his visit to Kyiv, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced that the German government would cease publicly releasing details about its military aid to Ukraine.
The move is aimed at creating "strategic ambiguity" to prevent Russia from gaining any tactical advantage regarding Ukraine’s weapons supplies, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
"Under my leadership, the debate about arms deliveries, caliber, weapons systems and so on will be taken out of the public eye," Merz said.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the German government had initially provided sporadic reports on its military aid to Kyiv.
However, under pressure from both parliamentarians and the media, Germany started publishing more comprehensive and updated lists of weapons systems and goods sent to Ukraine. Despite the shift in transparency regarding military aid, Merz reassured that Germany's commitment to supporting Ukraine remains steadfast.
"Germany will continue to expand its financial support. I am counting on you [...] to do the same with us," he said, addressing fellow European leaders during his visit to Kyiv.
