Trump administration terminates leases for three public golf courses
The Trump administration has announced it will terminate leases on three of Washington, D.C.'s public golf courses, marking a new front in President Donald Trump's efforts to leave a personal imprint on the US capital.
The decision affects the Rock Creek, East Potomac, and Langston golf courses. Leases on these properties, managed by the nonprofit National Links Trust, were originally awarded in 2020 under a 50-year agreement. The administration and the nonprofit differ on whether obligations to maintain and upgrade the facilities have been met, NBC reports.
“The Trump administration prides itself on getting the job done for the American people and partnering with others who share that same goal,” said a spokesperson for the Department of the Interior.
The move comes amid a broader campaign by Trump to reshape public landmarks in the capital. Projects under his direction include the controversial demolition of the White House East Wing to make way for a proposed $400 million ballroom.
Earlier this year, Trump-appointed board members at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts elected the president as chairman. Last month, the board voted to rename the institution the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts — a decision that has led some performers to withdraw from scheduled appearances.
