Chess champion Judit Polgár turns down Hungary presidency offer

21 July 2026 09:10

Judit Polgár has declined an offer to run for Hungary’s presidency, saying she is not prepared to assume what she described as the historic responsibility of uniting the nation.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the former chess grandmaster said: “I consider the initiative to nominate me for the post of President of the Republic the greatest honour of my life, and I am extremely grateful for it.”

Polgár’s remarks came after Prime Minister Péter Magyar publicly proposed her candidacy and the parliamentary faction of the Tisza party expressed clear support for her nomination. However, critics noted that the move was not preceded by the broad public consultations previously promised.

Responding to her decision, Magyar wrote: “Dear Judit! Thank you for everything you have done for Hungary! I believe that, on behalf of many millions of Hungarians, I can say: in another role, but we will continue to count on you in the future!”

The development comes amid a transition in Hungary’s presidency. Under recently adopted legislative amendments, the mandate of President Tamás Sulyok is set to expire on July 20. Parliamentary Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer will assume the role of acting head of state, while lawmakers are required to elect a new president within 30 days.

Tisza party leaders have repeatedly advocated for the introduction of direct presidential elections. As a result, the next president could serve in an interim capacity pending the adoption of a new Hungarian constitution.
