China accuses US of distorting its nuclear policy

11 February 2026 13:17

China has accused the United States of distorting its nuclear policy to serve Washington’s own hegemonic interests, warning that such actions pose a serious threat to global nuclear stability.

Speaking at a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the US is “the largest source of disorder for the international nuclear order and global strategic stability,” Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Lin also criticised American portrayals of China’s nuclear programme and expressed hope for a renewed dialogue on strategic stability with Moscow.

He called for an end to what he described as “baseless accusations” regarding China’s nuclear tests.

Earlier, US Vice President J.D. Vance highlighted Washington’s readiness to engage with Russia, China, and other nations to reduce global nuclear stockpiles. Speaking to Megyn Kelly, Vance said dialogue and cooperation—even with competitive powers—are crucial to preventing nuclear escalation.

His comments come as the New START treaty, the main pillar of US-Russia arms control, expired on February 5. Signed in 2010 and extended in 2021, the treaty capped each country at 1,550 deployed warheads and 700 delivery systems, while including verification measures like inspections and data exchanges.

However, its effectiveness has weakened due to suspended inspections amid geopolitical tensions, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Vance stressed that reducing nuclear weapons worldwide remains “the most important thing you could do for peace and stability.”
