China calls on Iran, US to resolve ongoing conflict, restore peace

China has called on Iran and the United States to resolve their ongoing conflict and restore peace in the Persian Gulf.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said the conflict between the two countries does not serve the common interests of the parties concerned or the international community, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

Speaking at a briefing, he stated that Tehran and Washington should “follow the path of peace, resolve disputes through dialogue and negotiations, and work to restore peace and calm in the Persian Gulf region and the Middle East as soon as possible.”

The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However, on the night of July 8, the United States resumed large-scale strikes on Iran.

The US administration subsequently effectively signalled an end to the use of large-scale military force against Iran and a shift towards an attempt to economically strangle the country through sanctions.
