China hopes for positive start in ties with US under Trump's leadership

17 January 2025 21:41

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that China is ready to achieve even greater progress in the China-US relations with the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.

President Xi made these remarks during a phone talk with the US President-elect, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

"We both attach great importance to our interaction, and we hope that the China-US relations will get off to a good start during the new presidential term of Donald Trump. We are ready to make even greater progress in the China-US relations, starting from a new starting point," he added.

US President-elect Donald Trump described his phone talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping as very good and expressed hope that Washington and Beijing would work together to resolve many issues in the near future.

“I just spoke to Chairman Xi Jinping of China. The call was a very good one for both China and the U.S.A. It is my expectation that we will solve many problems together, and starting immediately. We discussed balancing Trade, Fentanyl, TikTok, and many other subjects. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the World more peaceful and safe!” Trump wrote in Truth Social.

The phone talk between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump was held just several days before the inauguration of the US president-elect, set for January 20. This marks the first phone call between the two leaders since 2021. In his election campaign, President-elect Donald Trump proposed imposing 60 per cent tariffs on imports from China. During his first term (2017-2021), he effectively initiated a trade war with China over the significant trade imbalance in favour of the Chinese.

At that time, the Trump administration pursued a strategy of comprehensive pressure on Beijing and extensive containment of China. Washington imposed tariffs on $370 billion worth of Chinese imports, but this did not resolve the imbalance. Trump also significantly intensified pressure on Chinese tech companies, particularly Huawei.
