China launches campaign to protect children online
Chinese authorities have launched an annual four-month campaign aimed at protecting minors online and creating a safer digital environment for young people.
According to Xinhua, the initiative was announced by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC).
The campaign will be carried out in two stages. The first phase, timed to coincide with the summer holidays, will focus on combating harmful content, online fraud, and unethical marketing practices. Particular attention will be paid to the spread of violent materials, the creation of distorted AI-generated versions of cartoon characters, and fraudulent schemes designed to encourage children to make payments.
During the second phase, authorities will focus on regulating recommendation algorithms, improving educational content, and developing dedicated “modes for minors” on digital platforms.
The CAC also urged regional authorities to strengthen oversight of emerging online risks affecting minors, increase the accountability of internet platforms, and impose stricter measures against violators.
