27 April 2025 12:45

China has for the first time taken the lead in the world in terms of total installed nuclear power capacity, reaching 113 million kW, according to the China Nuclear Energy Association (CNEA).

According to the data, China currently has 102 nuclear power units that are either operational, under construction, or approved for construction, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The installed capacity of the 28 incomplete projects amounts to 33.65 million kW. Additionally, China has 58 commercial power units with a combined capacity of 60.96 million kW.

According to Cao Shudong, the first deputy chairman of CNEA, in 2024, the authorities approved the construction of 11 nuclear power units in the provinces of Jiangsu, Shandong, and Guangdong.

Last year, the total output of the country's nuclear power plants reached 444.7 billion kWh (4.72% of the total electricity generated). Cao Shudong explained that thanks to nuclear energy, China reduces its carbon dioxide emissions by 334 million tons per year.
