China’s BYD recalls more than 183,000 vehicles over safety risk

18 September 2026 19:46

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD has recalled more than 183,200 vehicles in China over a potential safety issue involving brake pedals, Bloomberg reports, citing the country’s market regulator.

The report said most of the recalled vehicles are electric and hybrid sport utility vehicles from the Tang series, while around 40,300 Qin sedans are also affected.

According to the notice, abnormalities have been found in materials used in the foot-pedal pads, which could cause them to break off after prolonged use and, in extreme cases, create a safety risk.

The recall coincided with increased scrutiny from Chinese regulators. Authorities have expressed concern that fierce competition and accelerated development cycles are forcing manufacturers to sacrifice quality to bring new models to market more quickly.
