China’s shipbuilding industry shows unstoppable growth

China’s shipbuilding industry maintained its status as the world leader across three major indicators for the 16th consecutive year in 2025, Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said.

In 2025, China’s shipbuilding output reached 53.69 million deadweight tons (DWT), marking an 11.4% increase from the previous year and accounting for 56.1% of global production, Xinhua reports.

The country also led in new orders, which totaled 107.82 million DWT, representing 69% of all new orders worldwide.

As of the end of December 2025, China’s backlog of shipbuilding orders stood at 274.42 million DWT, up 31.5% year on year, comprising 66.8% of the global market.
