China urges de-escalation in Iran-Israel conflict, reaffirms commitment to diplomacy

16 June 2025 18:42

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, emphasizing China’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further regional turmoil.

Guo highlighted China’s commitment to maintaining communication with relevant parties in pursuit of stability, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Responding to questions about recent phone conversations held by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi with his Iranian and Israeli counterparts, Guo expressed deep concern over Israel’s attacks on Iran, describing them as having “set a dangerous precedent” and triggering a sudden escalation of military conflict.

“We call on all parties to take immediate measures to de-escalate situation as soon as possible, prevent greater instability in the region, and create conditions for returning to the right track of resolving issues through dialogue and negotiation,” Guo stated.

Guo underscored the risks posed by continued escalation: “If the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to escalate or expand, countries in the Middle East will be the first to suffer.” He further stressed that “force cannot bring lasting peace” and that all international disputes must be addressed through dialogue and consultation.

“Only by upholding the concept of common security can the legitimate concerns of all parties be fully addressed,” he added.

When pressed on whether China has maintained further contact with officials from Iran and Israel since the weekend calls, Guo affirmed ongoing engagement. He reiterated that Wang Yi had urged both sides to resolve their differences peacefully and assured that China will “continue to play its role in resolving the current Iran-Israel conflict.”

Addressing prospects for reviving the Iran nuclear deal, Guo said, “China has always advocated for the peaceful resolution of the Iran nuclear issue through political and diplomatic means.” He expressed China’s willingness to “continue communication and coordination with relevant parties to play a constructive role in cooling down the situation, and create a favorable external environment for the political and diplomatic resolution of the Iran nuclear issue.”
