China urges restraint after US seizes Iranian cargo ship
China has expressed concern over the United States’ seizure of an Iranian-flagged cargo ship, urging restraint and warning against any escalation of tensions.
The comments were made by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs following reports that the United States had seized the vessel on April 19, AP reports.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Beijing hoped all relevant parties would act responsibly and avoid further deterioration of the situation.
“We hope all relevant parties will adopt a responsible attitude, abide by the ceasefire agreement, avoid escalating tensions or intensifying contradictions,” Guo said.
He stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in a key global shipping route, adding: “The Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway, and ensure its unimpeded passage serves the common interests of countries in the region and the international community.”
China also called for the restoration of normal operations in the strategic waterway, emphasizing the need to prevent disruptions to international maritime traffic amid heightened regional tensions.
