China urges US to lift Cuba blockade following terrorism list removal

21 January 2025 19:18

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun has condemned the ongoing US blockade against Cuba, which has lasted over six decades, calling it "brutal and inhumane."

“In addition to the listing, the US’s brutal and inhumane blockade against Cuba over the past six decades or so, which still remains in place, has wreaked havoc on Cuba’s economy and livelihood and inflicted great suffering on the Cuban people,” he stated during a recent briefing, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

Jiakun also welcomed the US decision to remove Cuba from its list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, describing it as "long overdue." He emphasised that the move came too late and failed to address the broader issues faced by Cuba.

The spokesperson criticised the original designation of Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, stating it lacked legitimate basis and constituted an infringement on Cuba’s sovereignty. He noted that this designation has been condemned by the majority of the international community, including China.

In the previous year, a UN General Assembly resolution supporting Cuba’s call for an end to the blockade received overwhelming support for the 32nd consecutive year.

China urged the US to align with the majority of the international community by fully lifting the blockade and sanctions against Cuba, calling for an end to actions that obstruct the island's socioeconomic development.
