Chinese envoy accuses US of pushing toward war in Taiwan Strait

Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui has accused a group of radicals in the United States of seeking to drag China into a war in the Taiwan Strait by promoting arms supplies to Taiwan, warning that any malicious provocations crossing Beijing’s “red line” would inevitably face a resolute response.

Zhang made the remarks in an interview with TASS, recalling China’s retaliatory measures against 20 American military-industrial companies and 10 of their executives, as well as the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s “Mission of Justice 2025” military exercises.

He said Washington, by disregarding the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiqués, is undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and sending an “extremely wrong signal” to separatists.

The ambassador emphasised that the Taiwan issue represents the first “red line” in China-US relations, stressing that China firmly safeguards its sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. He urged the US to immediately halt what he described as dangerous actions aimed at arming Taiwan.

Taiwan has been governed separately since 1949, when Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang forces retreated to the island after their defeat in the Chinese Civil War. Although it operates under its own administration, Taiwan continues to use the flag and certain symbols of the former Republic of China, which governed the mainland before the Communist Party came to power.

Beijing regards Taiwan as an integral part of China, a position officially recognised by most countries around the world. In recent years, however, tensions between Beijing and Taipei have intensified, with the Chinese government viewing any steps toward independence as a direct challenge to its sovereignty.
