China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, will travel to the United States next week to chair a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York, before heading to Canada for talks with senior officials, Beijing said on May 22.
According to the Chinese foreign ministry, Wang will preside over the Security Council session on May 26, marking a rare instance of a Chinese foreign minister personally chairing a UN body meeting on US soil, Caliber.Az reports per British media.
While in New York, he is also expected to meet the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as foreign ministers from “relevant countries”, the ministry said.
Following his US stop, Wang will travel to Canada from May 28 to 30 at the invitation of his Canadian counterpart, where discussions are expected to focus on bilateral ties and areas of economic and geopolitical tension.
