Mexican president rejects US meddling, says no one is "piñata"

01 June 2026 10:54

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has accused the United States of meddling in Mexico’s domestic affairs, saying that her country “is nobody's piñata.”

Speaking to supporters on May 31 during a rally in Mexico City, Sheinbaum noted that Mexico, as a free, independent and sovereign country, does not accept interference, Caliber.Az reports, citing dpa.

She stressed that a US Justice Department agency had requested the arrest of 10 Mexican nationals for extradition, wth a group including a governor, a mayor, and a sitting senator.

She did not identify them or provide additional details.

The claims could not be independently confirmed at the time.

Sheinbaum argued that if outside governments determine guilt or apply pressure on Mexican institutions, the situation amounts to interference rather than cooperation.

“Mexico is nobody's piñata,” she added, explaining that a piñata is a decorated figure traditionally broken by children until sweets fall out.

She also urged her supporters to organise public information gatherings in the coming weeks in town squares to promote discussion on protecting national sovereignty.

Her remarks come amid an increasing national debate in Mexico over foreign influence in domestic politics and elections.

Meanwhile, lawmakers recently passed a constitutional amendment supported by Sheinbaum’s ruling Morena party, which would permit elections to be annulled if foreign interference is established.
