US President Donald Trump is planning a triumphal arch in Washington, DC, to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary, sources say, marking his latest effort to impose his style on the nation’s capital, according to CNN.
The White House confirmed that the arch was Trump’s idea.“He came up with the design and has been part of the process every step of the way,” a senior official said. The arch would be part of America250 celebrations honouring the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Models of the proposed arch, captured by AFP photographer Jim Watson and displayed to visiting officials, feature columns, eagles, wreaths, and a gilded, winged figure. At a fundraiser, Trump showcased the models, saying, “It’s going to be really beautiful. I think it’s going to be fantastic… Whichever one would look good. I happen to think the large one,” to laughter.
The monument is proposed for a grassy traffic circle between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. Trump told reporters the arch is “for me.”
The design, inspired by France’s Arc de Triomphe, is in progress, with timing and funding yet to be determined.
