Commissioner: EU restrictions on Armenian flights focus on safety standards
The European Union’s ban on flights operated by Armenian-registered aircraft is based on technical safety concerns rather than political considerations, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Marta Kos told Armenian journalists in Brussels, according to Caliber.Az.
Kos explained that the issue falls under the jurisdiction of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
“Based on their assessment, there are specific measures Armenia still needs to implement. We are in contact with the Armenian Civil Aviation Committee, and until all requirements are met, a final decision has not been made,” she said.
She emphasised that the process is strictly technical. “This has nothing to do with political relations. We simply want to ensure that all safety standards are fully met. That is why we have proposed targeted assistance through the Twinning process, which will later be funded. This program allows experts from our member states, with relevant experience, to support your government in addressing these issues,” Kos added.
The EU initially imposed restrictions on Armenian airlines in June 2020. Seven carriers registered in Armenia were placed on the EU blacklist indefinitely and listed in “Annex A.” As an exception, these airlines are permitted to operate humanitarian and evacuation flights. The decision followed a review session conducted by the relevant EU committee.
