Commissioner proposes EU security council, plans tour of bloc's defence firms
European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius has proposed creating a European Security Council to coordinate major EU-wide defence projects and strengthen the bloc’s role in international security.
He made remarks at the European Defence Agency conference on January 28, saying that collective defence would be the EU’s strength in a world of power, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
“Collective defence would be our strength in a world of power. In a world of giants, we too must become giants—a good giant, promoting international law and cooperation, but still a strong giant,” Kubilius said.
At the same time, he announced a “missile tour” of EU defence enterprises to assess member states’ capabilities in missile and ammunition production. “I plan to use this missile mapping to enhance defence support,” the commissioner added.
Kubilius emphasised that the EU would continue to use its budget for joint procurement, specifically supporting member states in consolidating their demand in both their own and the EU industry’s interest.
“We will mobilise our budget to address bottlenecks in defence supply chains, reduce risks, and accelerate capacity building,” he noted.
