Concrete on tracks: 12-year-old identified in Polish train incident

A 12-year-old boy has been identified as responsible for a railway incident in Jedlanka, Poland’s Lublin Voivodeship, that could have led to a serious accident involving freight trains.

Police identified the boy after he dropped concrete fragments from the remains of a former railway platform onto the tracks while walking near the railway line, RMF24 reports. 

The concrete debris landed on the tracks, while the boy also placed several stones on the railway line.

The child admitted to the act in the presence of his father. The case has been referred to the Family and Juvenile Court in Łuków, which will determine what further measures should be taken.

“The Family and Juvenile Court will determine whether his behavior constitutes an act of demoralization and may impose educational measures on the boy,” said senior Sergeant Marcin Jóźwik from the Łuków District Police Headquarters.

The incident happened on September 22 evening in Jedlanka, in Poland’s eastern Lublin region, when two freight trains travelling in opposite directions hit concrete blocks placed on the tracks, officials said.

The blocks damaged the snowploughs at the front of the locomotives, but neither train derailed and neither driver was injured, reporters were told.

Rail traffic in the area was suspended for several hours.
