Confidence in Merz’s governing coalition erodes

20 December 2025 14:25

Public confidence in Germany’s governing coalition led by Friedrich Merz is declining rapidly, according to a new opinion poll.

A survey conducted by the INSA polling institute for the Bild newspaper suggests growing scepticism towards the CDU/CSU–SPD coalition, despite a series of recently announced reforms, Caliber.Az reports per German media.

The poll shows that 40% of respondents believe their personal financial situation will worsen under the new government, while 41% expect no change. Only around one in ten says they are hopeful of an improvement.

A similar sense of pessimism was recorded even among supporters of the governing parties, with many saying they do not expect life to change for the better.

Economic policy appears to be a major source of discontent. Nearly 59% of those surveyed said they do not believe the economy will grow under the current government — the highest level of scepticism since the coalition was formed. Just a quarter of respondents expect the economic situation to improve.

Migration has also emerged as a key concern for voters. Around 31% think the situation will deteriorate, 42% foresee no change, and only 18% expect an improvement. The issue has now become the top priority for the public, cited by 31% of respondents, ahead of the economy (24%) and security matters (15%).
