COP29 president to represent Azerbaijan at International Climate Summit in Nepal

02 May 2025 18:12

Mukhtar Babayev, the President of COP29 and Azerbaijan's Special Representative on Climate Issues, will lead the Azerbaijani delegation at the "Sagarmatha Sambaad" International Climate Summit in Kathmandu, Nepal, from May 15 to 18.

Babayev will be accompanied by a five-member delegation for the visit, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

During the summit, he will deliver a keynote address at the opening ceremony and engage in high-level meetings with key figures, including Nepalese President Ram Chandra Paudel, Prime Minister Sharma Oli, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, and Minister of Forests and Environment Aine Bahadur Shah.

Discussions around Azerbaijan's participation in the summit were previously held between Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister, Elnur Mammadov, and Nepal's Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba during a visit by an Azerbaijani government delegation to Kathmandu.

The summit, which runs from May 16 to 18, will focus on the theme of "Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Humanity." It aims to strengthen Nepal's commitment to multilateral dialogue on sustainable development and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

Note that, the Sagarmatha Sambaad is a multi-stakeholder dialogue forum dedicated to addressing key global, regional, and national issues. It serves as a platform for diverse participants, including individuals from various sectors who have the influence and capacity to drive positive change. The forum facilitates discussions aimed at shaping the discourse for the collective well-being of humanity.

Named after Sagarmatha (Mount Everest), the world's tallest mountain, the Sambaad symbolises friendship and the shared responsibility for the common good. As the highest natural landmark on Earth, Mount Everest stands as a silent witness to the unfolding global events, reinforcing the forum's mission of fostering international cooperation and addressing challenges that affect people worldwide.
