COP29: WMO report highlights challenges to Paris Agreement goals Every fraction of a degree counts

11 November 2024 17:04

During the opening day of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29)in Baku, a significant report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was unveiled.

The document underscores that the ambitious objectives set by the Paris Agreement face serious challenges, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo delivered the opening remarks at the presentation of the report in Baku.

“While we have seen instances where monthly and annual global temperatures have temporarily surpassed the 1.5°C threshold, it’s crucial to stress that this does not signify a failure in achieving the Paris Agreement’s core goal of maintaining the global temperature increase well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and sustaining efforts to cap warming at 1.5°C,” Saulo stated.

The secretary-general further highlighted the significance of temperature changes, no matter how small.

“Every fraction of a degree counts. Whether the global temperature is marginally below or above the 1.5°C mark, each incremental increase fuels more intense extreme weather events and heightens associated risks and consequences,” she added.
