Coup d'état thwarted in Democratic Republic of Congo

The representative of the Congolese army, Brigadier General Sylvain Ekenge, has said acoup attempt was made in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), it failed.

"The coup attempt was suppressed on Sunday by defense and security forces in the capital Kinshasa," the brigadier general said in a televised statement, TASS reports.

The army assures that the situation is under control and asks the people of Kinshasa to go about their business in peace." He added that the coup plotters had been arrested but did not reveal their names.

In the early morning hours, gunfire was heard outside the presidential palace in Kinshasa.
