Croatia registers 5.3 magnitude earthquake
Croatia was shaken near Rijeka, Primorsko-Goranska Županija, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 only 18 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicentre near Rijeka, Primorsko-Goranska Županija, Croatia, on the morning on February 16, 2023, at 10:47 am local time, Volcano Discovery reports.
Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicentre, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at a magnitude of 4.8.
