Cutting-edge features of Russia's Su-57 Felon fighter jet unveiled

10 July 2024 09:09

In the realm of modern military aviation, the Su-57 Felon stands as a testament to Russia's pursuit of cutting-edge technology in fighter jet development.

Boasting a blend of stealth capabilities, supermaneuverability, and advanced avionics, the Su-57 represents a significant leap forward from its predecessors, poised to redefine air combat and strike capabilities for the Russian Air Force and potentially for international markets, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

This aircraft's innovative design, including its unique propulsion system and aerodynamic features, underscores its potential to set new standards in aerial superiority and operational versatility.

According to reports from Malaysian media outlet Twentytwo13, there is growing international interest in the Russian Su-57 Felon fighter jet despite mixed reviews. The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is reportedly considering adding the Su-57 to its fleet by 2035.

Unnamed sources cited by Twentytwo13 suggest that Malaysia plans to incorporate the first Su-57 Felon by the end of its 14th Plan, with initial procurement of one squadron and an option for a second. The sources also indicate Malaysia's interest in acquiring American-made F/A-18C/D Hornets from Kuwait. Additionally, Malaysia aims to upgrade its current fleet of 18 Sukhoi Su-30MKM jets to the Super Flanker standard.

The Su-57 and the South Korean KF-21 Boramae are emerging as top contenders for Malaysia due to their modern operational capabilities. Initially, Malaysia explored various options, including the Eurofighter Typhoon, French Dassault Rafale, Swedish Saab JAS-39 Gripen, and American Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

However, all these aircraft belong to the 4.5 generation category and have been in service for approximately two decades. For example, the Super Hornet is approaching its 25th year in service, and Boeing plans to halt production by 2025. Many experts believe that this generation of aircraft may have reached or be nearing the peak of its development potential.

About Su-57

The Su-57 Felon is an advanced fighter jet developed by Russia's Sukhoi company, engineered to excel in both aerial combat and strike missions. Featuring stealth capabilities, supermaneuverability, and state-of-the-art avionics, it is slated to replace older aircraft such as the MiG-29 and Su-27 in the Russian Air Force.

Measuring approximately 66 feet in length, 46 feet in wingspan, and 15 feet in height, the Su-57 is optimized to carry a diverse array of weapons and sensors while maintaining a low radar profile.

Powering the Su-57 are two Saturn AL-41F1 engines, renowned for their robust performance. These engines propel the jet to speeds up to Mach 2 and enable supersonic flight without the use of afterburners, thereby conserving fuel.

A distinctive feature of the Su-57 is its innovative wing design, which integrates trapezoidal and swept configurations, coupled with widely spaced engines. This design enhances aerodynamic efficiency by improving lift, reducing drag, and bolstering stability and control, ensuring exceptional maneuverability across varying speeds and altitudes.
