No military role for Cyprus in Iran crisis, says president

02 March 2026 13:27

President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, has stated that the country has no intention of participating in any military operations related to the situation in Iran.

Addressing the nation following an overnight drone strike on the British airbase at Akrotiri in the south of the island, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides noted that the country is in a region of high geopolitical instability, facing numerous challenges and experiencing an unprecedented crisis, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“Our homeland does not participate in any way and does not intend to be part of any military operation,” Christodoulides stressed, noting that the government’s main focus remains “the security of the country and its citizens.”

He emphasised that Cyprus will continue to fulfil humanitarian obligations, delivering international aid to Gaza through the “Amalthea” maritime corridor.

The president added that his administration’s priority is the safety of the country and its citizens. According to him, a Shahed-type drone struck military facilities at the British bases in Akrotiri and Dhekelia overnight, causing minor material damage.
