Czech police probe threatening letters sent to President Pavel

Authorities in the Czech Republic are investigating a series of threatening letters sent to the office of President Petr Pavel in recent months, including messages addressed directly to the head of state, local media reported.

According to iDNES.cz, police are examining two cases — one dating from February 2026 and another from June — involving correspondence that contained threats, profanity and insults.

“We are investigating two such cases. One is from February 2026, and the other is from June of this year,” police spokesperson Jan Danek was quoted as saying.

He added that those responsible could face charges under a criminal statute covering “making threats with the aim of influencing a public official,” which carries a maximum penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment.

The presidential office confirmed that some of the correspondence it receives has been hostile in tone. “Part of the correspondence addressed to the administration or the president is confrontational, offensive or vulgar in nature. In some cases, it contains threats,” presidential spokesperson Vojtěch Šeliga said.

Officials declined to disclose further details about the contents of the letters, citing security considerations.

The incidents follow earlier threats against Pavel. At the beginning of the year, police charged a man who posted an online comment that raised concerns about the president’s health or life. The comment was made under an article covering Pavel’s two-day visit to the Olomouc region.
