Czech Republic to purchase dozens of German Leopard 2A8 tanks

The Czech government has approved the purchase of Leopard 2A8 tanks from Germany.

This news was confirmed by the country's Defense Minister Jana Černochová, Caliber.Az reports, citing Czech media outlets.

“Czechia will join the framework agreement on tank procurement between the German Defense Ministry and the manufacturer, KNDS. Joint procurement will help reduce the cost of the tanks,” the official statement said.

According to the report, Czechia plans to purchase 44 units of command and combat Leopard 2A8 tanks for 34.2 billion CZK (approx. 1.39 EUR) in the first phase. Deliveries of the tanks, which are widely recognized to be one of the finest main battle tanks on the market, are scheduled to begin in 2028, with the final units expected to be shipped by 2031, the report noted.

The Leopard 2 tank was originally invented by Germany's Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (now KNDS) and remains the most widely used tank of Western origin while also being the only tank currently in production on the European continent.
