Deadly landslide in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province kills at least four children

08 May 2026 16:40

At least four children have been killed after a sudden landslide struck a remote mountainous area in northeastern Afghanistan, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred on May 8 in the Yamgan district of Badakhshan province, where children aged between 10 and 15 were reportedly digging soil when a mass of earth collapsed on them, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The provincial Department of Information and Culture said rescue teams recovered the bodies from the site, confirming that all four children were pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragedy comes just days after another landslide in neighbouring Takhar province, where one person was killed and four others were injured earlier this week.

Landslides and flash floods are common in Afghanistan’s northeastern highlands, particularly during the spring season when melting snow and heavy rainfall destabilise already fragile slopes, often leading to deadly accidents in rural and mountainous communities.
