Death toll from Swiss bar fire in Crans-Montana rises to 41
The death toll from a fire at a bar in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana — which occurred earlier this year — has risen to 41.
An 18-year-old Swiss national died from burn-related injuries on January 31 in a hospital in Zurich, prosecutors said, Caliber.Az reports via Swiss media.
The fire broke out in the Le Constellation bar early on January 1, 2026, in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana during New Year’s Eve celebrations, killing dozens and injuring over 100 people as revellers tried to escape the rapidly spreading blaze.
On January 2, police confirmed that 40 people had died in the incident and reported 119 injured.
Authorities believe the blaze was accidental, likely caused when sparkling candles attached to Champagne bottles ignited the ceiling, and they have launched a criminal investigation into potential fire safety failures at the venue.
Local hospitals in the region were quickly overwhelmed, with many victims suffering severe burns and smoke inhalation, prompting transfers of critically injured people to specialised burn units in other European cities.
