Death toll from Venezuela earthquake continues to rise

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 3,342, according to the latest official figures.

According to TASS, Jorge Rodríguez, Speaker of Venezuela's National Assembly, announced the updated casualty figures on X, citing government data.

As of July 5, 16,740 people had been injured, while more than 86,000 families had received assistance. A total of 17,345 people remain homeless. The earthquake completely destroyed 190 buildings, with another 856 sustaining severe damage.

Search and rescue teams have saved 6,462 people, while 23,820 people have received treatment in hospitals and medical facilities. Authorities have also distributed 9,585 tonnes of food supplies to 86,794 affected families.

The earthquake struck Venezuela on the evening of June 24. Two powerful tremors, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, occurred approximately 40 seconds apart. Their epicentres were located about 10 kilometres apart in Yaracuy State.
