Death toll rises in Myanmar earthquake disaster

30 March 2025 12:26

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar has surpassed 1,700.

In addition to the fatalities, around 3,400 people have been injured, and approximately 300 individuals remain missing in the aftermath of the powerful tremors, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian  media.

On March 28, Myanmar was hit by a series of powerful earthquakes, with magnitudes reaching up to 7.7. However, Thailand's meteorological department recorded the tremors at a magnitude of 8.2. Aftershocks were felt across neighboring countries, including Thailand, China, and Vietnam, further amplifying the region's sense of peril.

The earthquakes caused widespread destruction throughout Myanmar, damaging a number of buildings, including the collapse of a bridge over the Irrawaddy River. The historic Mandalay Palace was also partially destroyed, adding to the nation's cultural losses. Emergency services have been overwhelmed by the volume of casualties and damages, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency in the affected areas.

In neighboring Bangkok, Thailand, the tremors were strong enough to cause skyscrapers to sway, and water from rooftop pools spilled over, illustrating the vast reach of the seismic event. Emergency teams across the region are working to provide aid, as recovery efforts are underway to search for survivors and assist the injured.

The situation remains critical, as authorities and international organizations brace for further aftershocks and work to address the humanitarian crisis left in the wake of this tragic earthquake.

Rescuers are desperately searching for survivors in Myanmar after the largest earthquake in more than a century flattened buildings. The US Geological Survey estimated that the death toll could top 10,000. Efforts have been hampered by shortages of heavy machinery.

The first overseas support has been arriving after the ruling military government made a rare plea for help. A Chinese team arrived in the country on March 29, according to state media, while India has sent a rescue and medical team along with urgent aid.

Myanmar, one of Asia’s poorest nations, is reeling from a civil war sparked by a 2021 military coup. Weak infrastructure makes it ill-equipped to deal with major natural disasters. Aid groups said communications blackouts and damaged roads are making it challenging to reach people who need help.
