Denmark warns Middle East crisis could delay overseas ballots

07 March 2026 11:10

The government of Denmark has warned that escalating tensions in the Middle East could disrupt the timely delivery of overseas ballots for the country’s early parliamentary elections scheduled for March 24.

According to Reuters, the warning was issued in a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

The ministry said the situation has been complicated by disruptions to international air travel. Major aviation hubs in the region, including Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, are experiencing interruptions to flight operations.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs cannot guarantee that postal votes cast in countries affected by the current situation will be delivered in time for the election,” the statement said.

The potential delays mainly concern ballots sent from countries in the Middle East, and possibly from certain countries in Asia, where international mail is routed through the region on its way to Europe.

The ministry did not specify how many Danish citizens are expected to cast their votes from abroad.
