Lawmaker: Azerbaijan to continue fight against colonialism on global stage

24 February 2025 17:07

Azerbaijan will continue its global fight against colonialism, a parliament member said after a key dialogue with civil society representatives from small island states and overseas territories impacted by colonialism and macronism.

The event, held in Baku, was attended by media representatives from territories colonized by France, members of the Azerbaijani National NGO Forum, MPs from the Milli Majlis (Parliament), and representatives from the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), Caliber.Az reports per local media.

Abbas Abbasov, Executive Secretary of BIG, emphasized the importance of the guests' visit to Azerbaijan, highlighting that such meetings contribute significantly to the global struggle against colonialism.

Parvana Valiyeva, a parliamentarian from the Milli Majlis, spoke to foreign journalists about the activities of the National NGO Forum and BIG, stressing the group's global platform aimed at amplifying the voices of colonized peoples to the international community.

"We raise this issue in international organizations and seek to draw the UN's attention to the problem of colonialism. Supporters of independence, political leaders, MPs, and experts from New Caledonia, French Polynesia, French Guiana, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Wallis and Futuna, Corsica, Réunion, and Mayotte (Comoros Islands) are actively participating in events organized by BIG, both in Azerbaijan and worldwide," Valiyeva noted.

She underscored that Azerbaijan would continue its global battle against colonialism, as independence is the rightful claim of colonized peoples and the restoration of historical justice.

Azer Allahveranov, another parliamentarian, pointed out that Azerbaijan's involvement in the Non-Aligned Movement and the Baku Initiative Group has drawn significant attention due to the country’s consistent stance against colonial domination.

"Azerbaijan itself was part of another state for over 200 years and experienced the consequences of colonial rule. That is why we support peoples suffering from colonialism, and we consider it our duty to convey to them that they are not alone in their struggle for independence," Allahveranov remarked. The dialogue concluded with a discussion session and a Q&A segment.
