Deputy mayor dies after monkey attack at home in New Delhi

21 November 2025 20:52

Surinder Singh Bajwa, a deputy mayor in New Delhi, India, tragically lost his life after being attacked by a group of rhesus macaques at his residence.

Bajwa was on the first-floor terrace of his home when a swarm of monkeys invaded the balcony. Witnesses say he tried to scare the animals away but lost his footing in the ensuing chaos and fell to the ground, The Mirror reports.

He was rushed to Apollo Hospital in critical condition, suffering catastrophic head trauma, and was declared dead the following day.

Delhi is home to thousands of rhesus macaques, which frequently intrude into residential areas, temples, and rooftops, posing ongoing risks to the city’s residents. Bajwa’s death has intensified calls for decisive measures to address the growing monkey problem.

In the wake of the incident, officials have faced heightened pressure to implement permanent solutions, including relocation programs and enhanced wildlife management strategies.
