Dive into Indonesia: Untold wonders awaiting eco-conscious travelers

08 March 2025 05:15

Euronews unveils in latest article that Indonesia, with its iconic beaches and vibrant nightlife, has long been a top destination for travelers. But as the country shifts its tourism focus toward sustainability and regenerative travel, there’s so much more waiting to be explored.

In an interview at ITB Berlin 2025, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, deputy minister for marketing at Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, highlighted the country's commitment to promoting quality tourism, with a focus on sustainability, local culture, and gastronomy. “We want to promote eco-friendly tourism alongside diving, snorkeling, fishing, and more,” Marthini said.

As part of this initiative, Indonesia launched a national "clean tourism" campaign, addressing the growing concerns over plastic waste. The campaign encourages local communities to actively participate in keeping rivers and oceans clean. “We have a campaign all over Indonesia to make sure that rivers and oceans are clean,” Marthini explained. “The ministry works with local government, students, and communities to educate people on sustainability.”

A prime example of Indonesia’s eco-conscious efforts is Likupang in North Sulawesi. This pristine destination, with its untouched beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and tropical forests, is being developed as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) that emphasizes resort-style tourism, zero waste management, and a circular resource economy.

For those seeking an authentic experience, Ubud in Bali has earned recognition as a gastronomic tourism destination. Known for its artistic flair, Ubud offers both high-end dining and local dishes like 'babi guling' (roast suckling pig) and 'gado-gado' (vegetables with peanut sauce).

Indonesia is also rich in wellness offerings, with destinations like Borobudur providing serene environments for yoga, meditation, and holistic treatments. With over 17,000 islands to explore, from remote homestays in rural villages to the stunning diving sites of Nusa Tenggara and Flores, Indonesia is a destination that invites travelers to go beyond the typical tourist path.

“Tourism is not only for big corporations, but also for the people in villages,” Marthini said, emphasizing the positive impact of tourism on local communities. Whether you're seeking adventure, culture, or relaxation, Indonesia’s evolving tourism landscape promises a rewarding experience.
