Dozens of WWII-era aerial bombs unearthed at German solar plant site

18 June 2026 18:28

Dozens of Soviet-era aerial bombs have been discovered during construction works for a solar power plant in eastern Germany, prompting a security cordon and a controlled response from authorities.

Around 30 unexploded bombs, each weighing roughly 100 kilograms, were found in the municipality of Lichterfeld-Schacksdorf in the state of Brandenburg, broadcaster RBB24 reported.

The munitions were uncovered during excavation works for a new solar energy facility. Workers also reportedly found anti-aircraft weaponry at the site.

Local authorities have sealed off the area as a precaution. The broadcaster said the discovery was made on the grounds of a former military airfield, which is believed to have been used during the Soviet period.

Officials said there is no immediate threat to nearby residents, noting that the closest buildings are located around 800 metres from the site.

Explosive ordnance disposal teams are expected to handle the removal and disposal of the devices.
