DR Congo records 13 more Ebola deaths as infections pass 1,000
The number of confirmed deaths from the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has risen to 267, an increase of 13 cases over the past 24 hours.
The figures were published in a daily bulletin issued by the country's Ministry of Communication and Media Affairs, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The ministry reported that the total number of infections has reached 1,048, up by 45 from the previous day.
A total of 371 patients remain under observation in hospitals and isolation facilities, while the number of people who have recovered has risen to 112. The case fatality rate is estimated at 25.5%.
The bulletin also noted a sharp increase in the proportion of identified and monitored contacts of infected individuals, reaching 70.8%. The World Health Organization says the figure should reach 95% for an outbreak to be effectively contained.
Authorities said no new cases of virus transmission have been detected in the province of South Kivu since 26 May. The current epicentre of the outbreak is located in Ituri Province.
