Drone found on frozen lake in eastern Finland, investigation underway
Authorities in Finland are investigating after an unmanned aerial vehicle was discovered on the ice of Lake Pyhäjärvi in the municipality of Parikkala on the morning of March 31.
In a statement, the Finnish Border Guard said the drone was spotted on the frozen surface of the lake, which lies in the Karelia region and extends across the border into Russia. The lake spans areas including Parikkala and Kitee on the Finnish side, Caliber.Az reports per Yle.
The North Karelia Border Guard has cordoned off the area to secure the site and support the ongoing investigation.
Police said they received a report about the drone on the afternoon of March 31 but could not confirm when it may have fallen onto the ice. Residential buildings are located within the restricted zone, and residents have been asked to temporarily leave the area as a precaution.
According to a statement from the Southeast Finland Police, no injuries have been reported and there is no evidence of property damage. Authorities added that the situation does not pose a danger to bystanders.
Police have assumed primary responsibility for the investigation. The Finnish National Criminal Police is assisting at the scene and is separately evaluating whether to open its own preliminary inquiry.
