Drones strike Peshmerga headquarters in Iraq’s Kurdistan region

06 April 2026 17:20

A command headquarters belonging to the Peshmerga forces in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region was struck by drone attacks overnight on April 5, according to the regional Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs.

The ministry said the attack was carried out by outlawed terrorist groups using four explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicles, though the exact location of the targeted facility was not disclosed, Caliber.Az reports.

The ministry confirmed that the attack resulted in casualties and caused significant material damage.

It also criticised the response of federal authorities in Baghdad, stating that Iraq’s federal government, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Joint Operations Command and security agencies had not taken a serious stance to prevent such attacks.

“The Peshmerga are an integral part of Iraq’s security and defence system and have consistently played a leading and effective role in safeguarding the security of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole,” the statement said.

The ministry called for an immediate end to what it described as acts of aggression, urging that those responsible be held accountable.

While emphasising restraint in the interest of the people of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the statement warned that failure by the federal government to respond appropriately could compel the Peshmerga authorities to take further measures.
