Dutch defence chief: Russia’s ambitions threaten Europe, not just Ukraine
The Netherlands’ Minister of Defence, Ruben Brekelmans, has warned that Russia’s “imperial ambitions” extend far beyond Ukraine and pose a wider threat to Europe.
In an interview with Ukrainian media, Brekelmans said Moscow seeks not only to reassert its sphere of influence but also to weaken the rest of Europe through hybrid tactics.
“We must all recognise that we are facing the same Russian aggression, and Russia’s imperial ambitions do not stop at Ukraine—they are moving further into Europe,” he stated.
Brekelmans also paid tribute to Ukraine, saying the country “is paying the highest price in defending its land and the freedom of the rest of Europe.”
The minister described being deeply impressed by the courage and ingenuity of Ukrainian forces during his visits, highlighting their ability to resist Russian aggression.
He added that the Dutch government is committed to continuing steadfast support for Ukraine, a pledge reflected in multi-year defence budgets.
“Ukraine can rely on the Netherlands in the years ahead, while Russia will see that our support remains unwavering,” Brekelmans said.
