Egypt’s president affirms continued support for Sudan amid ongoing crisis
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has reaffirmed Egypt's strong commitment to supporting Sudan in its efforts to end the ongoing conflict and establish a ceasefire.
In a meeting with Sudan's Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, who was in Cairo to attend the 12th World Urban Forum organized by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), el-Sisi emphasized the deep historical ties between the two nations and reiterated Egypt's unwavering support for Sudan in addressing its current crisis, Caliber.Az reports citing Turkish media.
A statement from the Egyptian president’s office says that el-Sisi assured that Egypt would continue to assist Sudan on all fronts as it seeks to resolve the conflict and overcome the hardships it faces.
In response, Al-Burhan expressed his gratitude to Egypt for its role in trying to mediate the situation and for its hospitality toward Sudanese refugees fleeing the violence.
The power struggle between Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been ongoing for more than 18 months. The conflict erupted following the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan for 30 years, in the wake of a popular uprising.
Efforts to resolve the conflict have repeatedly failed.
According to the United Nations, the violence in Sudan has led to some of the world’s largest crises of displacement and famine. More than 20,000 people have died, over 10 million have been displaced from their homes, and more than 25 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
