German chancellor, Irish PM to meet over EU budget, Berlin attack

28 July 2026 15:03

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin are expected to discuss the European Union's long-term budget during talks in Dublin, where Martin will also voice Ireland's solidarity with Germany following the Berlin Pride terrorist attack.

The meeting will take place as part of Ireland's six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Key items on the agenda include the Berlin attack and discussions on the EU's long-term budget, whose proposed framework has sparked disagreements among member states. Germany, in particular, is calling for cuts to the proposed €2 trillion spending plan.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss ways to boost Europe's competitiveness, simplify regulations, strengthen the single market and advance the EU's enlargement process.

The talks come several days after a man allegedly linked to ISIS drove a van into a crowd at the Berlin Pride festival before attacking people with a machete. One person was killed, and at least 29 others were injured.
