Ukraine denies involvement in Iraq, points to Russian narratives

28 July 2026 15:10

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has dismissed as baseless allegations by Iraq’s national security adviser, Qasim al-Abudi, that Kyiv was involved in unlawful activities in Iraq.

In a statement, cited by Ukrainian media, the ministry said the claims were unsupported by evidence and firmly denied any Ukrainian involvement.

“There are no facts or evidence supporting these accusations, which the Iraqi official himself acknowledged in his interview,” it said.

Kyiv also noted that Iraq had not raised any such concerns through diplomatic channels before the remarks were made publicly.

“If the accusations had any basis, it would have been logical to communicate them through appropriate diplomatic means,” the ministry said, adding that it was “unacceptable and irresponsible” for a senior official of a friendly country to make such claims without evidence.

The statement warned that the comments could damage bilateral relations and contradict principles of mutual respect.

Ukraine reaffirmed that it considers Iraq a key partner in the Middle East and remains committed to expanding political, economic and humanitarian ties.

The ministry also suggested the allegations echoed Russian disinformation narratives aimed at undermining Ukraine’s relations in the region.

“It cannot be ruled out that this episode is the result of external information influence or part of a coordinated information and psychological operation,” it said.

Kyiv urged Iraqi authorities to respond appropriately and prevent the spread of unverified claims through official channels.

Al-Abudi had earlier told Dijlah TV that Iraqi law enforcement had detained a “limited number” of individuals.
