EU summons Russian envoy after Romania airspace breach, consulate attack

The European Union has summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires in response to the alleged violation of Romanian airspace by Russian drones and the destruction of Latvia’s honorary consulate in Kyiv, the European Commission said on July 28.

Speaking at a briefing in Brussels, European Commission spokesperson Anuar El Anuni said the Russian diplomat was called to the European External Action Service as part of the EU’s response to the incidents, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“Today we summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires to the European External Action Service as part of our response to the invasion of Russian drones into Romania’s airspace and the destruction of Latvia’s honorary consulate,” El Anuni said.

He added that the EU had strongly condemned what it described as a deliberate violation of Romania’s airspace.

“This ill-considered act signals a serious escalation by Russia and threatens the safety of EU citizens, regional stability, and international peace,” the spokesperson said.

The European Commission reiterated that the bloc would continue supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on Moscow through further sanctions.

“We, as the EU, will continue our unwavering support for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine, founded on the UN Charter and international law. We will also continue to pressure Russia to end its military aggression, including through sanctions,” El Anuni said.

He also said that the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kalas, had proposed expanding the sanctions list against Russia as part of efforts to strengthen regional security.

“Our resolve to stand with Ukraine and its people in defending against Russia is stronger than ever,” El Anuni said.
